AmansaraAddress: Road to Angkor, Siem Reap view map
Amansara decadence now surrounds the once guest villa of King Norodom Sihanouk. It has been transformed into a 24-suite retreat that provides an ideal base for exploring the temples of Angkor. Amansara has the inviting ambience of a gracious home and is set in a private garden with mature trees providing shady rest areas, to compliment sun terraces and water pools. Its architecture is built in harmony with local culture and the environment, allowing ancient trees to remain.
Service is impeccable as the general manager provides an individual personalised welcome to each and every guest on arrival. The outside reception area is decorated with a huge bowl of chrysanthemums, and uniformed with old style remorks and bicycles.
Amansara's ‘club house feel' lounge and restaurant is a welcome retreat after a day at the temples as afternoon tea is served with home made cakes and cookies. Also included in the half board rate are house wines, and spirits which can be taken at leisure, as if in your own drawing room at home. A well stocked wine cellar, with cheese platter, is an added extra, but no less has a fantastic range of fine wines on offer.
The name Amansara is derived from the twinning of the word 'aman' - Sanskrit for peace - and 'Apsara' - the heavenly nymphs of ancient Hindu texts who emerged from the primordial churning of the oceans with the power to change their form at will and to bestow luck on those they favoured.
The Dining Room, near the swimming pool, is a focal point of the property and unique in design. It is circular in shape with a soaring seven-metre ceiling and an informal ambience for dining or all day lounging. The daily menu offers both traditional Asian and western cuisines and features the freshest of seasonal produce. The Dining area also features a range of books, a large map of Cambodia, and a walk-in wine cellar, complete with cheese board, where guests may make their selection.
If you are all templed out, head towards the restaurant lounge area and indulge in homemade cookies, spring rolls and other tantalising snacks or relax with a glass of full bodied red wine or a refreshing martini.
You can also dine and snack poolside, or enjoy your own in-room complimentary mini-bar that features several local items.
The library provides a range of coffee-table books, travel guides, novels, magazines, daily newspapers and complimentary Internet access through an in-house laptop and a large Apple desktop computer. . Also on offer are a range of audio CDs, board games and a comprehensive collection of reference books on the Angkor temples and Khmer civilization. Crash here on those rainy days.
The gallery provides a variety of hand-woven silks, lacquer-ware, jewellery, local handicrafts, textiles, souvenirs, apparel and sundries.
Most of Amansara's suites are set around a central, grassed courtyard. At one end of the lawn, adjacent to a shady pergola, is a 17.5m swimming pool with sundeck.
The 25m by 5m lap pool is also available closer to the pool suites.
Four treatment rooms, each with an attached relaxation area and private steam bath and shower, provides guests with a range of massage and beauty treatments using Cambodian techniques and natural products. All the treatment and relaxation rooms look out onto a reflection pond that is set against a 43.2m sandstone relief.
Whilst out and about in the temples you are provided with your own personalised guide, private remork and a whole of host of treats and surprises.
A variety of 'house outings' and customised excursions are available as part of your experience.
