Beyond Angkor: Temples and More
Day 1: Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom, Bayon, Ta Phrom and Preah Rup (-/-/-)
Arrival to Siem Reap early morning and pick-up from Siem Reap International Airport and direct transfer to Soria Moria Boutique Hotel.
After check-in and some relaxation you will be taken by your own private vehicle to the spectacular Angkor temples - including Angkor Thom, site of the famous smiling faces of the Bayon; Ta Phrom, famous for it's Bayan trees and overgrown by jungle, and, not least, the impressive Angkor Wat itself.
Accompanied by a local certified English-speaking guide, you will learn about the history of the Khmer kingdom, day-to-day life and the building of the temples. Sufficient time is allowed at each site for you to explore at your own pace, take photographs, or just soak up the atmosphere. There will be plenty of time for lunch to shelter from the heat of the midday sun and maybe to some additional reading at your own leisure.
Just before sunset, you will have the opportunity to climb to the top of one of the less crowded temples inside the complex, for a sight not to be missed.
Return to the hotel by early evening.
Day 2: Kruoesar Thmey, Floating Village, Phnom Kraom and Traditional Apsara Dance show. (B/-/D)
After breakfast, we start the day at Krousar Thmey (which means new family in Khmer). You will see the exhibition 'Tonle Sap - Sources of Life', which showcases the ecological and social richness of the great Tonle Sap Lake.
An English-speaking guide will take you through the exhibition and discuss the work of Krousar Thmey who provides material, educational and social support to many under-privileged children through various community projects.
A nice drive through Cambodian country side will take you to The Great Lake Tonle Sap. Here you will board a small boat who will take you out to one of the floating villages. You are able to experience first hand how the communities live and work on and with the water. This leisurely ride will pass households on stilts, floating markets, clinics and schools.
One the way back to Siem Reap, you are able to climb up to Phnom Kraom - a small mountain near the Lake. On top there is a small temple which is also a part of the Angkor Complex, and you will have a beautiful view of the lake and Siem Reaps countryside.
In the early evening you will be able to attend a traditional Khmer dinner whilst watching traditional Khmer Apsara dancing.
Day 3: Kbal Spean, Angkor Centre for Conservation and Biodiversity, and Banteay Srey and the Landmine Museum. (B/-/-)
Today is a unique opportunity to see more of the real Cambodia and visit environmental projects based off the beaten tourist tracks.
After early breakfast at the hotel, we set off for a 1.5 hour drive out of Siem Reap town. Along the way you will see traditional Khmer villages. First, we take a short scenic trek through the jungle and visit Kbal Spien, "the river of the thousand lingas", with ancient carvings on the riverbed.
Then we visit the Angkor Centre for Conservation of Biodiversity (ACCB), which is the first Nature Conservation Centre in Cambodia. It aims to contribute to the conservation of wildlife in the Angkor region and the preservation of biodiversity in Cambodia in general. Principally, a breeding facility for critically endangered animal species, there is an educational and information centre for the local people as well as for tourists.
On the way back to Siem Reap, we also visit Banteay Srey, also known as 'Temple of Women', with amazingly intricate detail carved in red sandstone.
Before we return to the hotel, we will also stop at the Landmine Museum where you are able to learn and get a better understanding about Cambodia history and the current landmine situation in Cambodia.
Day 4: Own leisure (B/-/-)
After breakfast at the hotel, the morning and early afternoon will be at you own leisure and you will have the opportunity to relax in the Sky Jacuzzi or have a leisurely stroll along the riverside, visit the Old Market and other places of interest.
